Violence and Mental Illness

I think the importance of proper care and treatment of a mental illness can not be stressed enough. Mental illnesses are unique and can not be cured as simply as many other illnesses. Each case is unique and requires certain attention and support from a strong figure, whether it be a doctor, therapist, parent, or friend. Mental illness can be very unpredictable, and in some cases can lead to a person harming themselves or others. This only stresses the need for the appropriate treatment and coping methods. When people suffering from mental illness commit crimes, it can usually be drawn back to something they are lacking in life. This "thing" could be medication, support, or love.

In Michael's case, he had a very caring and loving mother, who was also strict when she had to be. Because Michael has boundaries and an incredible support system set up by his mother, he is certainly on a much smoother path and a brighter future. For example, she warned Michael that if he threatened to kill himself [again] she would take him to a mental hospital. When he did, she stuck to her word. She did this for not only his own protection, but to teach him that it was not okay to make these claims, and especially not to act on them.
